Like his brother William, Otto was born in Virginia Dale, Larimer Co., CO - a small town near the Wyoming border.  Otto was 8 years old when his mother died in Berthoud, Larimer Co., CO.  City directories indicate Otto was a clerk in a merchantile, and a worker in a sugar factory.  The area where Otto and his family lived was then, and is still, noted for sugar beets.

Otto, his brothers and father were noted for the first automobile transportation to Estes Park, which was incorporated in 1908.  He was a mechanic and driver for the company for a number of years.  The road between Loveland and Estes Park was twisty, dusty and rugged.  Accidents happened, and Otto is reported to have suffered from at least one accident.  His grandson, Stephen James III notes that one accident had later consequences which led to Otto's ultimate debilitation.  He was sent to the State Hospital for the Insane in Pueblo, CO where he died.

He was survived by his wife Charlotte (who remarried), his daughter, Frances, and son Lloyd.  Otto was buried in Lakeside Burial Park, Loveland, Larimer Co., CO.
