At about 7 years of age, Daniel's family relocated from Illinois to Iowa.  By 1860, they journeyed across the country to settle in Colorado.  During the journey, Daniel helped hunt and scout for the pioneers.  Their first residence was in Denver, then a small town with few amenities.  One obituary notes that Daniel moved to Ward, CO where he ran a hotel.  He served briefly in the Civil War, as part of the 3rd Calvary.  This unit was part of the infamous Sand Creek Massacre in Colorado, though Daniel's role is unknown.  He was honorably discharged in Denver, December 30, 1864.  He later moved to Valmont, where he married Sarah ("Sadie") Murchland - soon after their marriage they moved to Virginia Dale, Larimer Co., CO.

By 1881, Daniel had relocated his family to Berthoud, Larimer Co., CO where his older brother Stephen S. Osborn had settled as one of the founding families of the small town.  Unfortunately, his son Dellie, daughter Dora and wife all died within 16 months of one another.  His youngest child, Ralph Marion Osborn, was only a few weeks old at the time of his mother's death.  The following year, Daniel remarried and soon relocated a short distance away to Loveland, Larimer Co., CO.

While a farmer, Daniel was noted as having the first thresher machine in the area, and one source has credited him with the first water rights in Loveland.  The following appeared in the Rocky Mountain News on Feb 28, 1882:

"The Berthoud correspondent of the Longmont Ledger says: "Quite a novelty in the way of farming around here is Dan Osborne's steam plow. From the way it goes snorting over the prairie, tearing the turf with its three plows, mules and bronchos will soon be at a discount."

His pension packet, as a civil war veteran, indicates Daniel was 5'11" with blue eyes. At the time of his initial application (1892 ), he suffered from "dispepsia, sick headache, loss of teeth- rhumatism and general disability".

Daniel embodied an entrepreneurial spirit - by 1908 he and his sons filed incorporation papers with the State of Colorado for the Loveland-Estes Park Auto Company.  This enterprise is credited with providing the first automobile service to Estes Park, CO.  Until buildings could be erected, the company housed its Estes Park operations in a tent it shared with a similar venture started by F.O. Stanley - the proprietor of the famed Stanley Hotel in Estes Park.  Mr. Stanley was also the co-inventor (along with his brother) of the Stanley Steamer automobile, a steam powered vehicle well suited to the terrain and environment of the area.  It is interesting to note that Daniel used the Steamer for his venture first - before Mr. Stanley himself set up his similar venture.

Later in life, Daniel became a gardener.  He and Sarah moved to Denver and resided with his son, William, shortly before his death.  Sarah died 5 weeks following Daniel.  Both are buried in unmarked gravesites in Loveland.
